This song is played in G minor. A minor key is a sad sounding scale. Look carefully at the diagram of where to put your fingers to play this song in G minor. It is best to place your whole left hand "back" on the fingerboard toward the scroll of the fiddle.
A note of caution here for beginners: After playing a song in a minor key it is a good idea to warm up by playing a major scale several times in a row in tune before playing other tunes in major keys. I've noticed that sometimes beginners have a tendency to stick with the notes (sounds) of a minor key when moving back into the major (happy) sound and it makes them play out of tune.
